Make a Personal Growth Plan That Will Truly Work

Step 1: Know Your “Why”

You need to get crystal clear on why you want to grow. Without a strong reason, it’s easy to give up when things get tough.

Ask yourself: What’s driving me? What’s the one thing I really want to achieve or change?

Here are some examples:

  • I want financial freedom so I can spend more time with my family.
  • I want to get healthy so I can feel confident and energized every day.
  • I want to grow my business so I can quit my job and live on my terms.

I started my personal growth journey in 2014. Before then, I didn’t even know it was a thing, which is a little embarrassing to admit.

Once I found it, though, I was hooked. It changed my life completely, and I’ve never looked back.

So write down your “why” and keep it somewhere visible. This is your anchor when motivation fades.


Step 2: Choose One Goal to Start With

You can’t tackle everything at once. If you try, you’ll spread yourself too thin and end up overwhelmed.

When I first started, I thought I needed goals for every area of my business and life. So I set way too many, and instead of making progress, I just ended up stressed out.

Eventually, I realized it was better to focus on 1 or 2 goals at a time. Once I did, I started achieving my goals faster and felt less overwhelmed.

Pick one area of your life to focus on. Here are some common areas:

  • Health: Lose weight, exercise, eat healthier.
  • Career: Learn a new skill, get a promotion, or start a small business.
  • Finances: Pay off debt, save for a big goal, and increase your income.
  • Relationships: Build stronger connections with loved ones, and improve communication.

Once you’ve picked your focus, set a specific goal. Instead of saying “I want to be healthier,” say “I’ll go for a 20-minute walk every day.”

The clearer your goal, the easier it will be to take action.


Step 3: Break It Into Actionable Steps

Big goals can feel overwhelming, but breaking them into smaller steps makes them manageable.

Here’s how to do it:

  • Write down the end goal.
  • List all the smaller actions that will get you there.
  • Focus on just one action at a time.

For example:

  • Goal: Save $5,000 this year.
    • Step 1: Create a budget and track your spending.
    • Step 2: Cancel unused subscriptions.
    • Step 3: Put $100 from every paycheck into savings.

Step 4: Track Your Progress

Tracking isn’t just for accountability, it’s also motivating. When you see progress, you’re more likely to keep going.

Use a notebook, app, or calendar to track your actions. Here’s how to make it simple:

  • At the end of each day or week, write down what you accomplished.
  • Celebrate small wins, like drinking more water or finishing a task on your to-do list.

Seeing even small progress adds up and keeps you focused.


Step 5: Set Yourself Up for Success

If your environment works against you, sticking to your plan will be much harder. Set yourself up to win.

Here’s how:

  • Remove distractions. Keep your phone out of reach during focused work time.
  • Prep ahead. Lay out workout clothes the night before or plan meals for the week.
  • Use reminders. Put sticky notes or calendar alerts to keep your goals top of mind.

One thing that’s made a huge difference for me is planning my ‘must-do’ tasks every day and tackling them first thing in the morning.

Once those are out of the way, I can relax and focus on anything else I want to do. It keeps me on track without the overwhelm.

The easier you make it to follow through, the more likely you’ll stick with it.

Step 6: Build Habits, Not Just Goals

Goals are great, but habits are what create lasting change. When you turn actions into habits, they become automatic and require less effort.

  • Track them daily. Use a simple checklist or app to mark off each day you complete your habit.

Once your small habits feel easy, build on them. Over time, they’ll compound into big results.

Step 7: Plan for Obstacles

Life is unpredictable, and challenges will pop up. The trick is to anticipate them and have a plan.

Ask yourself: What might get in the way of my progress? Write down your answers and solutions.

    • Solution: Exercise in the morning instead.
  • Obstacle: I might forget to save money this month.
    • Solution: Automate my savings so it happens without me thinking about it.

When you’re prepared, obstacles won’t derail you. Instead, they become opportunities to problem-solve and stay on track.

Small rewards along the way make the journey more enjoyable and help you stay consistent.

Reflection is where growth happens. Take a few minutes each week to ask yourself:

  • What went well?
  • What could I improve?
  • Do I need to adjust my plan?

For my business, I make it a habit to check my analytics every week. Based on what I see, I plan for the week ahead.

I also take a moment to reflect on my day, focusing on the good things and reimagining anything that didn’t go as planned as if it turned out perfectly. It helps me stay positive and focused on improvement.

Remember, growth isn’t about perfection, it’s about progress. If something isn’t working, tweak it. The best plans are flexible and adapt to your needs.


Step 10: Stay Inspired

It’s easy to lose motivation over time, so keep your inspiration alive. Surround yourself with reminders of your “why.”

Here’s how:

  • Create a vision board with images of what you’re working toward.
  • Follow people online who motivate and inspire you.
  • Revisit your goals and remind yourself why they matter.

When you stay inspired, it’s easier to keep pushing forward, even when progress feels slow.
